How to check Claude usage

To check Claude usage, open Settings › Usage on claude.ai or in Claude Desktop. It shows progress bars for your current five-hour session and your weekly limits, with reset times. In Claude Code, run /usage to see the same plan bars plus a breakdown of what used them.

A guide from Switch, an independent Claude Desktop profile manager. Switch is in early access ahead of its public release.

Check Settings › Usage in the app

On a Pro, Max, Team or seat-based Enterprise plan, Anthropic says you can open Settings › Usage to see how much of your limits you've used. As of October 2026 the Plan usage limits section shows:

  • Current session: how much of the five-hour session limit you've used, and how long is left in the session.
  • Weekly limits: your progress and when the weekly limit resets, for all models and for Fable if your plan includes it.

The same page shows usage credits if you've turned them on, and a Resets section if Anthropic has given you a limit reset. On a usage-based Enterprise plan there are no set limits, but you can track consumption on the same page. Source: Usage limit best practices.

Check usage in Claude Code

In Claude Code, type /usage. Anthropic's costs documentation says subscribers see plan usage bars, activity stats and a usage breakdown on that screen. On Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans the breakdown shows:

  • How much recent usage went to skills, subagents, plugins and individual MCP servers.
  • Recommendations, such as trimming a large CLAUDE.md or lowering the effort level.
  • The heaviest scheduled loops, on recent versions.

Press d or w to switch between the last 24 hours and the last 7 days. The breakdown is calculated from local session history on that Mac, so it doesn't include usage from other devices or claude.ai.

Anthropic's help center also mentions /status for checking your remaining allocation, and /status shows which login is active. In the VS Code extension, the Account & usage dialog shows the same breakdown.

If you use an API key instead

If Claude Code is signed in with an API key, there's no plan limit to check. The Session block at the top of /usage shows token counts and an estimated dollar cost for the current session, and /cost shows the same running spend. Anthropic calls this figure an estimate; for actual billing, check the Usage page in the Claude Console. See Models, usage, and limits in Claude Code.

Warnings before you reach a limit

You don't have to keep checking. Anthropic says you'll see warning messages as you approach a limit. When you reach one, Claude tells you when it resets; in Claude Code the message reads along the lines of "limit reached, resets at" a time. If Claude Code is partway through a step when the session limit hits, it may finish that step and show "Usage limit reached · wrapping up" (Use Claude Code with your Pro or Max plan).

Checking usage on more than one account

Usage belongs to an account, so each account has its own Settings › Usage page and its own limits. If you have a work account and a personal one, check each while signed in to it. Usage on one never adds to or frees up the other.

If you keep both signed in with Switch, each profile opens Claude Desktop with its own sign-in, so you open Settings › Usage in that profile's window. Switch itself doesn't read or display usage. It only keeps the accounts apart; see keeping work and personal accounts apart.
