When does the Claude limit reset?

Claude's session limit resets every five hours, and its weekly limit resets once a week at a fixed day and time assigned to your account. As of October 2026 this applies to Pro, Max and Team plans. Your exact next reset time is shown in Settings › Usage.

A guide from Switch, an independent Claude Desktop profile manager. Switch is in early access ahead of its public release.

The five-hour session limit

Anthropic's help center says the session-based limit resets every five hours on Pro and Max, and the pricing page describes it as a rolling five-hour window that applies to every plan, including Free. Settings › Usage shows how much time is left in your current session, so you don't have to work it out yourself (Usage limit best practices).

When you hit the session limit, Claude tells you when it resets. In Claude Code the message shows a reset time.

The weekly limit

Pro, Max and Team plans also have a weekly limit that applies across all models. As of October 2026, Anthropic says the weekly limit:

  • Resets at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account.
  • Keeps the same day and time no matter when you start using Claude or when your subscription began.
  • Gives you your full weekly allowance each cycle.

To see your day and time, open Settings › Usage. Max plans also have a separate weekly limit for Fable, shown on the same page. Sources: What is the Pro plan?, What is the Max plan?, What is the Team plan?.

Limit resets you can use early

Anthropic occasionally gives eligible plans a limit reset. Using one sets either your five-hour session limit or your weekly limit back to full straight away, depending on the reset offered. According to What is a limit reset?:

  • Your weekly limit still resets on its usual day and time afterwards.
  • You don't need to reach a limit before using one, and you can't undo it.
  • An unused reset expires at the time shown on the offer.

To use it, open Settings › Usage on the web or in Claude Desktop and click Reset for free. The button isn't available on mobile or in Claude Code in the terminal, but the reset applies to your whole account, Claude Code included.

If you can't wait for the reset

Anthropic offers two ways to keep going before a reset:

  • Usage credits: on paid plans, work continues on usage credits at standard API rates instead of stopping. Your session and weekly limits still reset on their usual schedule (Manage usage credits).
  • Upgrading: a new plan's limits apply as soon as you upgrade (How do usage and length limits work?).

In Claude Code, you can also switch to a lighter model with /model, since heavier models use more of your allowance.

Resets are per account

Each Claude account has its own reset schedule. On a Team plan, limits are per member, so a colleague reaching their limit doesn't affect yours, and limits can't be shared or transferred between members.

That also means a second account doesn't speed up a reset. Each account keeps its own plan and limits, and switching accounts to avoid waiting can conflict with Anthropic's terms. If you have separate work and personal accounts for real reasons, Switch can keep both signed in to Claude Desktop on a Mac, but it doesn't show usage or change when anything resets.
