Claude Pro vs Max: price, usage and who each fits
Claude Pro costs $20 a month and Max starts at $100, as of October 2026. The main difference is usage: Max 5x gives five times Pro's per-session allowance and Max 20x gives twenty times. Both include Claude Code, and both have five-hour and weekly limits.
A guide from Switch, an independent Claude Desktop profile manager. Switch is in early access ahead of its public release.
Prices
US prices from claude.com/pricing as of October 2026, before tax:
- Pro: $20 a month billed monthly, or $17 a month on an annual plan ($200 billed up front).
- Max 5x: $100 a month.
- Max 20x: $200 a month.
Max is monthly only. Anthropic notes that mobile app store prices may differ and that it doesn't offer standing discounts on individual plans (What is the Max plan?).
Usage: the main difference
Anthropic describes Max usage relative to Pro:
- Max 5x includes five times Pro's per-session usage.
- Max 20x includes twenty times Pro's per-session usage.
Both plans have a session limit that resets every five hours and a weekly limit across all models. Anthropic doesn't publish the size of the weekly limits, so the 5x and 20x figures describe the session, not necessarily the week. On models, the pricing page lists Fable as available on Pro through usage credits, while Max includes Fable up to 50% of weekly limits. Sources: What is the Pro plan?, What is the Max plan?.
Other differences
As of October 2026, Max includes everything in Pro, plus:
- Higher output limits.
- Priority access at high-traffic times and early access to new features.
- Monthly API credits for building on the Claude Platform: $100 on Max 5x and $200 on Max 20x. Anthropic says these can't be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps (Use Claude Code with your Pro or Max plan).
Both plans include Claude Code, and on both it shares the same limits as chat.
Who each plan fits
Pro fits people who use Claude most days but rarely hit the five-hour limit, or who hit it occasionally and can wait. Pro users can also turn on usage credits for the odd heavy day, paying standard API rates for the extra.
Max 5x fits people who hit Pro's limits regularly, especially with Claude Code, where long sessions use usage quickly.
Max 20x fits people who work with Claude for most of the day and still run into Max 5x limits.
A practical approach is to start on Pro, watch Settings › Usage for a couple of weeks, and upgrade only if you keep reaching limits. Upgrades take effect right away. Is Claude Max worth it? walks through that decision.
When two separate plans make sense
Sometimes the real choice isn't Pro or Max. Your employer may give you a Team seat for work, while you keep a personal Pro plan for your own projects. These are two accounts, each with its own plan, its own limits and its own chats, and keeping them apart is often what both your employer and you want.
Two plans are not a way to add up limits. Each account's usage stays with that account, and using extra accounts to get around limits can conflict with Anthropic's terms. If you need more usage on one account, upgrade that account.
If both plans use the same email, Claude's own account menu switches between them. If they use different emails, Switch keeps each one signed in to its own Claude Desktop profile on a Mac, with its own colored Dock icon and keyboard shortcut.
