How many Claude accounts can you have?

The clearest limit Anthropic publishes is on phone verification: as of October 2026, one phone number can verify at most three Claude accounts. Every account has its own plan, its own billing and its own usage limits. Several Max subscriptions mean several separate bills and separate allowances, not one combined pool.

A guide from Switch, an independent Claude Desktop profile manager. Switch is in early access ahead of its public release.

Three accounts per phone number

Every new Claude account has to verify a phone number by text message, and there is no way to skip that step. As of October 2026, Anthropic allows a maximum of three Claude accounts to be verified with the same number. Try a fourth and you will see an error that the number is already in use (Anthropic's phone verification article).

The same article says:

  • VoIP numbers, Google Voice, numbers created in apps and landlines can't be used.
  • The phone number on an account can't be changed after verification.
  • To reuse a number, sign in to one of the accounts verified with it and ask support to unlink the number. Or verify with a different number that hasn't been used.

Multiple Claude accounts on the same phone number

Up to three accounts can share a verification number, so a personal account and a work account on one mobile number is normal. The phone number is only used for verification, according to Anthropic, and isn't a login method. You still sign in to each account with its own email, either through a login link or Continue with Google (how to log in).

Accounts tied to an employer often come from an invitation to a Team or Enterprise organization rather than a fresh signup. Anthropic notes you can be a member of multiple Team or Enterprise organizations at the same time (find and join an organization).

Each account has its own subscription

A paid plan is attached to one account. Anthropic's Consumer Terms describe signing up for a subscription by first creating an account and then subscribing on it (Consumer Terms). A Pro or Max plan on one account doesn't carry over to another, and a Team seat is separate from any personal plan you hold.

Team works a little differently. One person can buy more than one Team plan to create more than one team, and each is its own organization with its own billing (account management FAQs). Enterprise customers who want several plans are pointed to Anthropic's sales team.

What multiple Max subscriptions mean

As of October 2026, Max comes in two tiers: Max 5x at $100 a month and Max 20x at $200 a month, billed monthly only (web prices; mobile pricing may differ). Each tier gives 5 or 20 times Pro's per-session usage, with a session limit that resets every five hours and a weekly limit that resets at a fixed time assigned to your account (What is the Max plan?).

If two accounts each have Max, you get:

  • two separate monthly charges
  • two separate allowances, each tracked on its own account
  • separate chats, projects and settings in each account

What you don't get is a shared pool. Nothing in Anthropic's plan pages describes combining limits across accounts. Anthropic also says it may limit usage in other ways at its discretion to keep access fair.

Be careful about why you want the second plan. Anthropic's terms forbid bypassing its systems or protective measures, so rotating between accounts to avoid usage limits can conflict with them. If one account keeps running out, Anthropic's own options are a higher tier or usage credits on a paid plan (Claude pricing).

Keeping several accounts manageable

Two accounts on the same email (personal plus Team or Enterprise) switch from the account menu under your initials. Accounts on different emails need separate sign-ins: browser profiles on the web, or separate Claude Desktop profiles on a Mac.

Switch is a Mac app that gives each Claude Desktop account its own profile, colored Dock icon and keyboard shortcut, with every profile signed in at once. It doesn't include a subscription and doesn't change plans or limits. See Claude Desktop profiles, or compare every method in two Claude accounts on one Mac.
